Return Monday

My son came back from half-term on Monday and within ninety seconds had told me three things about his week, identified two things he was worried about for the month ahead, and asked a logistical question about a school trip I hadn't heard about. This is typical. The car from school on the first day back is one of the most information-dense environments I have encountered as a parent.

There is something about the return from a break — any break — that loosens things. The week away creates a before and an after, and the after requires some processing. The child comes back from half-term with a week of accumulated experience that has not yet been categorised, and the return to the normal routine triggers the categorisation. Things come out.

I've learned to treat the Monday after any significant break as a listening session rather than a catch-up session. Not: let me tell you what happened while you were away, how was your week, here is the schedule. Instead: something happened, and there will be a gap between the asking and the answer, and if I fill the gap I will not hear what was in it.

In fashion, we talk about the 'negative space' — the space around a garment that defines its shape as much as the garment itself. Conversation has negative space. The silence after the question is not nothing. It is where the answer forms.
