The second week. What the biology says about why week two is harder than week one — and what parents usually misread.

It's a Wednesday in south London, the second week of September. My son — he is eight — has been fine all day. His teacher reported it specifically when I collected him: a good day, focused, confident. He walked out of the gate and into the afternoon. Then his sister said something ordinary to him, something that didn't warrant a response, and he shouted at her. He went upstairs. He came back down fifteen minutes later and wanted to sit next to me on the sofa while I worked. He didn't want to talk about it. He is eight. He has no language for what's happening, and that's not a criticism of him. The thing that's happening doesn't have an obvious name from the inside. I've studied stress biology long enough to recognize this pattern. What looks like a behavioral problem in the second week of school is almost never a behavioral problem. It is the biology doing its job. And the job it does in week two is not the same job it was doing in week one.

I study how stress systems calibrate. In particular, I study how the HPA axis — the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal circuit that governs the release of cortisol — behaves in biological systems that are encountering a new environment for the first time.

The research on school entry has been consistent for decades, and a study published this August in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry put numbers to something that those of us who work in this field have observed for a long time. Researchers tracked salivary cortisol in two hundred UK children across their first three weeks of primary and junior school. What they found was not what most parents would predict: morning cortisol levels were measurably higher in week two than week one. The spike didn't come on the first Monday. It came on the second.

The reason is the novelty buffer. In week one, the brain is in genuine exploration mode. The amygdala's threat-detection function is partially suppressed by the engagement of novelty-seeking circuits — the same neurological dynamic that makes a new environment feel stimulating rather than threatening. Children arrive in week one energised by the newness of it. They are, in a measurable biological sense, less stressed.

By week two, the novelty has worn off. The brain has catalogued the environment, identified the social hierarchies, registered the teacher's expectations. Now the HPA axis gets its first honest reading of the actual demands. The cortisol curve, which was artificially flattened by novelty in week one, climbs to reflect what school actually requires of this child's nervous system.

Parents are not prepared for this. They watch their children navigate week one successfully and conclude that school is going well. When week two brings the shouting, the tears at bedtime, the reluctance at the gate — they interpret it as regression. It isn't. It's the biology arriving at an accurate assessment.
