I have been thinking about what children need most from the adults around them. Not the material things — those are provided or not according to circumstances. The relational things. The things that arrive in the specific interactions.

Courage and honesty. These two, together, are the most formative gift available. Not kindness alone — kindness without honesty produces what feels like warmth but withholds the truth that would actually help. Not honesty alone — honesty without courage produces the well-meaning non-comment, the hedge, the it-depends.

The child who grows up knowing that the adults around them will tell them the truth — at personal cost, with care, in a way that is usable — has a very specific kind of security. Not the security of being told everything is fine. The security of knowing that when something is not fine, they will be told. This is the specific thing that produces the change. The change comes from the practice. The practice comes from the decision to try it once, this week, in the ordinary moment that is already available.
