My daughter takes a summer inventory. She doesn't call it that — she wouldn't recognise the word for what she does. But she does it, every July, around the middle of the month. She goes over what has happened so far. She says, usually to nobody in particular, what she has found out about the summer. She notes what she still wants to do before it ends.

I have come to think of this as a form of seasonal self-regulation. She is checking where she is in the available time. She is managing toward an endpoint that she can sense approaching.

The mid-July inventory is one of the most useful parenting conversations available in summer. Not because it reveals what went wrong. Because it reveals what the child actually wanted — the real preferences, the specific desires, the things that were mentioned once and then not followed up on. This is the specific thing that produces the change. The change comes from the practice.
