The parent-teacher meeting. What to actually listen for.

Twenty minutes, four teachers, six 'howevers'

My daughter's parent-teacher meeting was last Thursday. Twenty minutes per teacher, four teachers, eighty minutes total spread across an afternoon. By the end I had seen four different people describe the same child and heard the word 'however' a combined total of six times.

I've been to enough of these meetings to have developed a way of decoding them. The format is artificially compressed and the social conventions that govern it mean that most of the information is delivered obliquely. If you take the meeting at face value — listening to the words as a direct transfer of information — you will leave knowing less than if you understand what the delivery conventions are doing.

The structure of the parent-teacher assessment is almost universally positive-qualification-positive. The teacher begins with something genuine and good, then introduces the qualification, then returns to something encouraging. The qualification is the meeting. Everything else is the frame. The word 'however' is the hinge. Six 'howevers' in eighty minutes is not bad news — it is four teachers all focusing on the same area. That is, actually, information.

The second thing: specific anecdotes. If a teacher tells you a specific story — something your child said in class, an incident they remember — your child has registered as an individual to that teacher. This matters more than any grade. The grade is a numerical comparison. The anecdote is evidence of being seen. A child who has been seen by their teacher is in a different position than one who hasn't, regardless of what the grade says.
