Why waiting is one of the best things you can teach
In my clinic in Vienna, the last week of November is the week I ask families one question: how are you managing the anticipation? Not the celebration — the anticipation. The month before Christmas is the month that does the most interesting neuroscientific work in children, and most of it happens before anything has been given or received.
Anticipation — the expectation of a future positive event — activates the dopaminergic system in a way that is distinct from the experience of the event itself. When a child knows that something good is coming, the brain begins releasing dopamine not just in response to the reward but in response to the cues that signal the reward is approaching. This is why the smell of mince pies can produce a particular kind of pleasure before a single one has been eaten.
Advent is, neurologically, a four-week dopamine regulation exercise. The calendar, the candles, the rituals that mark each day as one closer — these are the cues. The question is whether the anticipation is managed in a way that builds pleasurable regulation or in a way that escalates into overload.
The difference between the two is mostly about pace. Families who layer every day of December with events, activities, and surprises are inadvertently teaching the dopamine system to expect a constant high. Families who space the cues and protect the quiet between them teach the system to hold pleasurable anticipation without needing constant novelty. The second family has children who sleep better in December and eat better and are easier to be around.
