January is the month when screen time in most households hits its annual peak. I track this in my own household and I've stopped being surprised by it. The combination of dark evenings, cold weather, post-holiday boredom, and the quiet death of good intentions produces maximum default screen use. The question is not why. The question is what one structural change makes a real difference.

The screen conversation in January has a specific shape in my household. It is not 'you spend too much time on screens.' It is: 'what do we actually want to do with our evenings?' The first is a criticism. The second is a design question. I've been doing design work long enough to know that design questions produce different conversations than criticisms, and different outcomes.

The research on reducing screen time in families shows that the most durable reductions come from environmental interventions, not from rules. The family that moves the television to a less central location uses it less. The family that puts phones in a basket before dinner eats without them. The family that establishes one screen-free evening per week and protects it against exceptions is, six months later, still running that evening. The family that announces a 'no screens after eight' rule is, six months later, running a 'no screens after eight, except tonight' rule.

The mechanism is friction. Adding even a small amount of friction to screen access β€” having to go to another room, having to ask, having to stand up β€” reduces use by a measurable amount. Removing friction increases it. The environment is the policy. The rule is what you fall back on when the environment hasn't done its job.
