In my clinic in Vienna, I have a question I ask families at the end of the academic year that I started asking about fifteen years ago because I noticed the answers were more interesting than the things I was measuring. The question is: what's something small your child did this year that you almost didn't notice but did?

Every family has an answer. The answers are always specific. And they are, almost without exception, more revealing about the child's development than the grades or structured assessments.

The quiet victory is different from the visible achievement. The visible achievement — the prize, the good grade, the performance — is noticed because it was designed to be noticed. It has an audience. It produces feedback. The quiet victory is the one that has no audience except the parent who happened to be paying attention. Every family has an answer. The answers are always specific. And they are, almost without exception, more revealing about the child's development than the grades or the structured assessments.

The quiet victory is different from the visible achievement. The visible achievement — the prize, the good grade, the performance — is noticed because it was designed to be noticed.
