There are currently 8.1 billion people alive on Earth. Every single one of them was once a child who did not know how to talk. Every single one went through the same transition — from the pre-verbal state, where everything is sensation and cry and gesture, to the moment when a specific sound was paired with a specific thing, and stayed paired, and became a word. Eight billion first words. Eight billion moments of emergence.
Language acquisition is one of the most studied phenomena in developmental science and one of the most poorly understood. We know the timeline: the babbling starts around four months; canonical babbling — repetitive syllable sequences, da-da-da, ba-ba-ba — around six to eight months; first words around twelve months; and then, between eighteen months and two years, the vocabulary explosion, when children go from ten or twenty words to several hundred in a matter of weeks.
What produces this explosion is not well understood. One theory, proposed by Liz Bates and Brian MacWhinney in the 1980s and refined many times since, is that language acquisition is not one process but several — syntax, semantics, phonology, pragmatics — that develop in parallel and suddenly converge. The vocabulary explosion, on this account, is not a breakthrough but a threshold crossing: all the separate developments reach the point where they can support each other, and the system takes off.
Another thing we know: the quality of language input matters more than the quantity. This is the core finding of the 30-million-word gap research, though the research is more nuanced than its popularisation. Children who hear more varied vocabulary, more complex sentence structures, more conversational turns — not more words in total, but more varied and responsive words — develop language more rapidly and more robustly than children who hear simpler, less variable input.
The most powerful input, across all the research, is responsiveness: the adult who responds to the child's sounds and gestures with language, at the moment the child produces them. Not the adult who talks a lot. The adult who talks back, specifically, to what the child is doing.
