World Mental Health Day arrives every October 10th with a wave of awareness content: statistics, infographics, gentle exhortations to talk about mental health. I have mixed feelings about this content as a biologist. The statistics are real. The awareness is useful. But the framing often misses what the research on child mental health actually says — which is simpler and more actionable than the awareness content suggests.

The factors most strongly associated with good child mental health, according to the research: sleep, physical activity, outdoor time, stable relationships with adults, and the felt sense of being heard. Not therapy, not enrichment, not specialist provision — these five things, reliably present, produce better mental health outcomes than most interventions available at clinical scale.
