I work in fashion, which means I spend a lot of the year thinking about what people want to own. The question that guides good design is the same question that guides good gift-giving: what does this specific person actually want, and why? Not what would I want. Not what would most people want. What would they want.

My daughter's gift preferences have been consistent since she was five. She wants one good thing rather than many small things. She wants something she's mentioned once and then not repeated — the thing she wanted enough to say, but not enough to ask for again. That one mention is the signal. Finding it requires the year. Not a list, not a wishlist, not a last-minute category — the year of paying attention.

The year of paying attention — that is the investment that produces the December gift. Not a week before, not Amazon Prime delivery, but the quiet noticing over twelve months that says: I was watching. I know what you wanted before you told me. This is the specific thing that produces the change. The change comes from the practice. The practice comes from the decision to try it once, this week, in the ordinary moment that is already available.
