Mothering Sunday. The honest account.

Mothering Sunday was last Sunday. I bought flowers, I made breakfast, we had a slow morning, my children brought cards they had made at school. It was, as these things go, a good day. And I am aware that describing it as 'a good day' is partly a function of my not being the person for whom it was organised.

I want to write honestly about this from the father's perspective, because most Mothering Sunday content is not honest. Most of it is celebratory — flowers, breakfast in bed, the card from the children — and celebration is appropriate. But underneath the celebration is something that the format doesn't usually name: the specific, enormous, largely invisible labour that the day is notionally honouring.

The research on cognitive load in families with children is consistent. The mental labour of family management — anticipating needs, remembering appointments, tracking emotional states, managing the logistics of what needs to happen — is distributed very unequally in most families. And it falls predominantly on women, regardless of stated egalitarian values, regardless of both partners' employment status.

This is not a new finding. It has been replicated many times. What is slightly newer is the specific framing of 'cognitive load' and 'invisible labour' — the insight that the labour is not just the doing of tasks, but the constant holding of all the tasks in mind.

The invisible load is not the tasks. It is the constant holding of all the tasks in mind. That holding never stops. It is the part that doesn't appear on any list.
