The spring equinox was Wednesday — March 20th. In Vienna, the first real warmth of the year arrived with it, the way it always does: not gradually but suddenly, as if a decision had been made. The city changes on the equinox in a way that is more perceptible than any other seasonal change. People come outside.
This is also the anniversary of WiseTip. The first edition went out in the third week of March 2023. A year ago, Markus was writing to nobody, or to almost nobody — the first edition reached several dozen readers. This edition reaches several thousand. The year between those numbers is what a year of consistent attention produces.
I want to write about consistency, because it is not a celebrated virtue. The spring equinox is celebrated. The harvest is celebrated. The milestone is celebrated. The hundred ordinary Saturdays between the milestones are not celebrated, and yet they are what the milestones are made of.
Children need to understand this. They live in a world of highlights — a world where the visible things are the peaks, the successes, the dramatic moments. The algorithmic environment selects for these. The social environment rewards them. The child who only sees peaks has no understanding of what produces peaks.
